Variable as Coefficient of Variable

Constant as Coefficient of Variable Variable as Coefficient of Variable

Before you go through this topic, you must know :
What are Constants ?
What are Variables ?

Variable as Coefficients of Variable :-
This situation occurs when an algebraic expression contains a constant and two or more variables.
For example :- In an algebraic expression 45ab, we have :-
Variables = a, b and Constant = 45,
45a is the coefficient of variable b and......... (1)
45b is the coefficient of variable a...........(2)
So from (1) and (2), we can learn that A Coefficient can also have a Variable.

Following examples can further explain How a Coefficient of a variable can have a Variable -

Example 1 = Find the coefficient of variable x in an algebraic expression 4xy.
Answer = 4y is the coefficient of variable x and contains :-
Constant = 4 and Variable = y
So, a coefficient of variable x contains a variable y
Hence we can say that A Coefficient can also have a Variable.

Example 2 = Find the coefficient of variable p in an algebraic expression 26pq.
Answer = 26q is the coefficient of variable p and contains :-
Constant = 26 and Variable = q
So, a coefficient of variable p contains a variable q
Hence we can say that A Coefficient can also have a Variable.

Example 3 = Find the coefficient of variable b in an algebraic expression 100abc.
Answer = 26q is the coefficient of variable p and contains :-
Constant = 100 and Variables = a, c
So, a coefficient of variable b contains variables a and c
Hence we can say that A Coefficient can also have a Variable.
