Define like terms

Addition of Like Terms Subtraction of Like Terms Multiplication of Like Terms

Before you understand what are Like Terms, you must know:

1. What are terms ?
2. What are coefficients ?
3. What are variables ?

In order to understand 'Like terms', let's consider following terms:

4x, 5x, 10x, 101x, 213x, 3456x

In the above terms, do you notice something common ?

Yes, in the above term, variable i.e. "x" is same and power of variable is also same i.e. "1". And only coefficients are different i.e. 4, 5, 10, 101, 213, 3456.

So, such terms whose variables are same and have same power, are known as "LIKE TERMS"

For further understanding, let's find out like terms among the following :

a, 4x2, 2z4, 3a, 9s7, 2x2, 10a, 10s7, 24x2, 121s7, 321a, 999z4

So like terms are

(a, 3a, 10a, 321a) - have same variable i.e. (a) and same power of variable i.e. (1)
(4x2, 2x2, 24x2) - have same variable i.e. (x) and same power of variable i.e. (2)
(2z4, 999z4) - have same variable i.e. (z) and same power of variable i.e. (4)
(9s7, 10s7 121s7) - have same variable i.e. (s) and same power of variable i.e. (7)
