Subtraction of Whole Number and Fraction

Subtraction (Same Denominator) / Like Fractions Subtraction (Different Denominators) / Unlike Fractions Subtraction (Whole Number and Fraction) Subtraction(Mixed Fraction)

When we have to subtract a whole number and a fraction, we write whole number as fraction and this can be done by putting 1 as the denominator of the given whole number i.e x and x/1 are both equal. And then we can solve the given problem as we solve Subtraction of Fractions with Different Denominator.

Study the following examples of Subtraction of Whole Number and Fraction

Example 1 : Solve 2 - 1
5

Answer = We can also write the above as

2
1
- 1
5

Now, follow the process of Subtraction of Fractions with Different Denominator (Topic discussed above)

{ (2 × 5) - (1 × 1) }
5

{10 - 1}
5
= 9
5

Example 2 : Solve 5 - 2
7

Answer = We can also write the above as

5
1
- 2
7

Now, follow the process of Subtraction of Fractions with Different Denominator (Topic discussed above)

{ (5 × 7) - (2 × 1) }
7

{35 - 2}
7
= 33
5

Example 3 : Subtract 5
11
from 10

Answer = We can also write the above as

10
1
- 5
11

Now, follow the process of Subtraction of Fractions with Different Denominator (Topic discussed above)Solve

{(10 × 11) - (5 × 1) }
11

{110 - 5}
11
= 105
11
