Convert the following decimals into fraction of lowest form.

A) 0.35
B) 0.125
C) 15.25
D) 2.04
E) 4.72
A) 0.35

Solution: Follow the steps of conversion:

  • Step 1: Numerator of fraction is equal to decimal (without the decimal point) and we get: Numerator = 35

  • Step 2 : Find number of Decimal Place in the given decimal - Decimals Places = two (i.e. digits 3 and 5)

  • Step 3: Denominator of fraction is equal to 1 followed by as many number of zero as there are decimal place.

    As calculated in step 2, there are two decimal places, so we will write two zero's next to digit 1 and we get: Denominator = 100

    Now, we know that:

    Fraction = Numerator
    Denominator

    Put the values of numerator and denominator from step 1 & Step 3 and we get:

    Fraction = 35
    100

    Now to convert the fraction into lowest form, follow below steps:

    Find HCF of numerator and denominator of fraction

    Fraction = 35
    100

    HCF of 35 and 100 = 5

  • Step 5: Divide both numerator and denominator by HCF and we get:

    Fraction = 35 ÷ 5
    100 ÷ 5

    Solve the above division expression and we get:

    Fraction = 7
    20

    B) 0.125

    Solution: Follow the steps of conversion:

  • Step 1: Numerator of fraction is equal to decimal (without the decimal point) and we get: Numerator = 125

  • Step 2 : Find number of Decimal Place in the given decimal - Decimals Places = three (i.e. digits 1, 2 and 5)

  • Step 3: Denominator of fraction is equal to 1 followed by as many number of zero as there are decimal place.

    As calculated in step 2, there are three decimal places, so we will write three zero's next to digit 1 and we get: Denominator = 1000

    Now, we know that:

    Fraction = Numerator
    Denominator

    Put the values of numerator and denominator from step 1 & Step 3 and we get:

    Fraction = 125
    1000

    Now to convert the fraction into lowest form, follow below steps:

    Find HCF of numerator and denominator of fraction

    Fraction = 125
    1000

    HCF of 125 and 1000 =125

  • Step 5: Divide both numerator and denominator by HCF and we get:

    Fraction = 125 ÷ 125
    1000 ÷ 125

    Solve the above division expression and we get:

    Fraction = 1
    8

    C) 15.25

    Follow the steps of conversion:

  • Step 1: Numerator of fraction is equal to decimal (without the decimal point) and we get: Numerator = 1525

  • Step 2 : Find number of Decimal Place in the given decimal - Decimals Places = two (i.e. digits 2 and 5)

  • Step 3: Denominator of fraction is equal to 1 followed by as many number of zero as there are decimal place.

    As calculated in step 2, there are two decimal places, so we will write two zero's next to digit 1 and we get: Denominator = 100

    Now, we know that:

    Fraction = Numerator
    Denominator

    Put the values of numerator and denominator from step 1 & Step 3 and we get:

    Fraction = 1525
    100

    Now to convert the fraction into lowest form, follow below steps:

    Find HCF of numerator and denominator of fraction

    Fraction = 1525
    100

    HCF of 1525 and 100 = 25

  • Step 5: Divide both numerator and denominator by HCF and we get:

    Fraction = 1525 ÷ 25
    100 ÷ 25

    Solve the above division expression and we get:

    Fraction = 61
    4

    D) 2.04

    Follow the steps of conversion:

  • Step 1: Numerator of fraction is equal to decimal (without the decimal point) and we get: Numerator = 2.04

  • Step 2 : Find number of Decimal Place in the given decimal - Decimals Places = two (i.e. digits 0 and 4)

  • Step 3: Denominator of fraction is equal to 1 followed by as many number of zero as there are decimal place.

    As calculated in step 2, there are two decimal places, so we will write two zero's next to digit 1 and we get: Denominator = 100

    Now, we know that:

    Fraction = Numerator
    Denominator

    Put the values of numerator and denominator from step 1 & Step 3 and we get:

    Fraction = 204
    100

    Now to convert the fraction into lowest form, follow below steps:

    Find HCF of numerator and denominator of fraction

    Fraction = 204
    100

    HCF of 204 and 100 = 4

  • Step 5: Divide both numerator and denominator by HCF and we get:

    Fraction = 204 ÷ 4
    100 ÷ 4

    Solve the above division expression and we get:

    Fraction = 51
    25

    Solution: Follow the steps of conversion:

  • Step 1: Numerator of fraction is equal to decimal (without the decimal point) and we get: Numerator = 4.72

  • Step 2 : Find number of Decimal Place in the given decimal - Decimals Places = two (i.e. digits 7 and 2)

  • Step 3: Denominator of fraction is equal to 1 followed by as many number of zero as there are decimal place.

    As calculated in step 2, there are two decimal places, so we will write two zero's next to digit 1 and we get: Denominator = 100

    Now, we know that:

    Fraction = Numerator
    Denominator

    Put the values of numerator and denominator from step 1 & Step 3 and we get:

    Fraction = 472
    100

    Now to convert the fraction into lowest form, follow below steps:

    Find HCF of numerator and denominator of fraction

    Fraction = 472
    100

    HCF of 472 and 100 = 4

  • Step 5: Divide both numerator and denominator by HCF and we get:

    Fraction = 472 ÷ 4
    100 ÷ 4

    Solve the above division expression and we get:

    Fraction = 118
    25
