Division of Fraction and Whole Number

Division (Fraction and Whole Number) Division (Fraction by Fraction )

This concept is further divided into:

  • Division of Fraction by Whole Number
  • Division of Whole Number by Fraction

    Division of Fraction by Whole Number

    Steps of division are:
  • Step 1: Find reciprocal of given whole number
  • Step 2: Multiply given fraction with reciprocal of given whole number (calculated in step 1)
  • Step 3: Multiplication of numerators, divided by, multiplication of denominators

    Example 1 : Divide 15
    4
    by 10

    Answer = Write fraction and whole number in division expression and we get:

    15
    4
    ÷ 10

    Find the Reciprocal of whole number i.e. 10

    Reciprocal of 10 = 1
    10

    Multiply fraction with the reciprocal of whole number (calculated above) and we get;

    = 15
    4
    x 1
    10

    Multiplication of numerators, divided by, multiplication of denominators and we get;

    = 15 x 1
    4 x 10
    = 15
    40

    Example 2 : Divide 53
    10
    by 5

    Answer = Write fraction and whole number in division expression and we get:

    53
    10
    ÷ 5

    Find the Reciprocal of whole number i.e. 5

    Reciprocal of 5 = 1
    5

    Multiply fraction with the reciprocal of whole number (calculated above) and we get;

    53
    10
    x 1
    5

    Multiplication of numerators, divided by, multiplication of denominators and we get;

    53 x 1
    10 x 5
    = 53
    10

    Division of Whole Number by Fraction

    Steps of division are:
  • Step 1: Find reciprocal of given fraction
  • Step 2: Multiply given whole number with reciprocal of given fraction (calculated in step 1)
  • Step 3: Multiply whole number with the numerator and keep the denominator same

    Example 3 : Solve 2 ÷ 3
    5

    Answer = Find the Reciprocal of fraction and we get

    Reciprocal of fraction 3
    5
    = 5
    3

    Multiply whole number (i.e. 2) with the reciprocal of fraction (calculated above) and we get

    = 2 x 5
    3

    Multiply whole number with the numerator and keep the denominator same & we get;

    = 2 x 5
    3
    = 10
    3

    Example 4 : Solve 10 ÷ 77
    86

    Answer = Find the Reciprocal of fraction and we get

    Reciprocal of 77
    86
    = 86
    77

    Multiply whole number with the reciprocal of fraction (calculated above) and we get

    = 10 x 86
    77

    Multiply whole number with the numerator and keep the denominator same & we get;

    = 10 x 86
    77
    = 860
    77
