Before you study how to convert improper fraction into decimal you are advised to read

What is Improper Fraction ?

In order to convert an improper fraction into decimal, divide numerator by denominator in long division method.

Example - Convert 5
2
into decimal

In the given fraction we have:

Numerator = 5
Denominator = 2

Steps of converting fraction into decimal in long division method are as follows:
Step 1: Dividend = Numerator = 5
Divisor = Denominator = 2

Place dividend and divisor in long division method, as shown below:

Step 2: Divide dividend (5) by divisor (2).
Since 5 is not completely divisible by 2, so will choose a multiple of 2; which is smallest & nearest to 5.
And 4 is a number which is a multiple of 2 & is smallest nearest number to 5.
So we will write 4 below the dividend, as shown below:

Step 3: Divide 4 by 2 and we get 2.
So write 2 in the quotient, as shown below:

Step 4: Subtract 4 from 5 and we get 1 as remainder, as shown below:

Step 5: Since we have 1 as remainder, so long division method is not completed.
In order to complete the division, we will put a decimal point after 5 in dividend and after 2 in quotient, as shown below:

Step 6: Now, in dividend write Zero next to decimal point, as shown below:
(Note: we can write as many zero as are required to complete the division)

Step 7: Carry Zero from dividend and place it next to the remainder 1, as shown below:

Step 8: Divide 10 by 2.
We know that 10 is the multiple of 2 and on dividing 10 by 2, we get 5.
So, we write 10 in the dividend column and 5 in quotient after decimal point; as shown below:

Step 9: In the last, we get remainder as Zero (as shown below); so long division method also ends here, as shown below:

Hence, fraction 5
2
is equal to decimal 2.5
